Mercedes CLA named car of the year 2026

Mercedes-Benz has been awarded the prestigious Car of the Year 2026 title with its new CLA model, marking only the second time in the brand’s history that it has won this renowned automotive distinction since its creation in 1964.

The announcement was made on Friday, January 9, during the official award ceremony held at the Brussels Motor Show. The event attracted strong attention from industry professionals and media representatives, reflecting the importance of the award for the European automotive sector. This year’s competition brought together seven finalists selected from a broader list of vehicles launched in 2025.

After nearly half an hour of anticipation, the jury—composed of 59 automotive journalists from across Europe—declared the Mercedes CLA the overall winner. The German sedan secured a clear victory with a total of 320 points, finishing well ahead of its closest rivals, including the Skoda Elroq and the Kia EV4.

Jurors praised the CLA for its advanced multi-energy platform, which combines 48-volt hybrid technology with fully electric versions. The model also stood out for its driving comfort, aerodynamic design, and high-performance electric powertrain. Built on a new platform, the electric version features an 800-volt architecture that allows fast charging and improved efficiency, resulting in extended driving range.

Despite its premium price positioning, the Mercedes CLA was widely recognized as a technological benchmark in its segment. Its success reinforces Mercedes-Benz’s role as a key innovator in the evolving automotive landscape.
