Mélenchon condemns “Violation Of International Law” after death of Ali Khamenei
French left-wing leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon has strongly criticized the circumstances surrounding the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, describing the operation as a denial of international law.
Khamenei’s death was confirmed by Iranian state media following airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel. The development has triggered sharp political reactions across Europe, particularly in France, where debate over the legality and consequences of the strikes has intensified.
In a message posted on social media, Mélenchon stated that while he did not defend Khamenei’s record, eliminating political leaders through military force could not be justified. He argued that removing or assassinating leaders whose policies are opposed undermines the foundations of international law and sets a dangerous precedent.
The leader of La France Insoumise also warned against what he described as an escalating dynamic driven by power politics, calling for renewed reliance on international institutions such as the United Nations to prevent further destabilization.
Other French political figures echoed concerns about regional instability. Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure urged that any political transition in Iran should take place under United Nations supervision to avoid chaos. He stressed that the country now faces uncertainty regarding leadership succession and the role of the Revolutionary Guard.
Environmental party representatives also criticized the joint American-Israeli offensive, describing it as an escalation that could deepen turmoil in the Middle East.
Analysts note that the reactions reflect broader divisions within European politics over how to respond to mounting tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States. As diplomatic channels strain under the pressure of military confrontation, calls for multilateral solutions and respect for international norms are growing louder in several capitals.
