Morocco sets its sights on the global artificial intelligence race

Morocco is increasingly positioning itself as an emerging technology hub in Africa, with artificial intelligence (AI) becoming a central part of its digital transformation strategy. Recent coverage by German public broadcaster Deutschlandfunk Kultur highlighted the kingdom’s efforts to expand its capabilities in AI and strengthen its position in the rapidly developing global technology landscape.

According to the German broadcaster, Morocco is seeking to avoid falling behind in the international AI race by investing in data centers, developing specialized skills and accelerating the digitalization of public administration. These efforts form part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure and creating the conditions for greater technological innovation.

Morocco has increasingly presented digital transformation as an important driver of economic development. Investments in computing infrastructure, connectivity and professional training are expected to support businesses and startups while creating new opportunities for young professionals and technology entrepreneurs.

The country’s ambitions were also reflected at GITEX Africa in Marrakech, one of the continent’s major technology events. Around 300 Moroccan startups took part in the exhibition, showcasing projects and technologies in areas ranging from artificial intelligence and fintech to digital services and emerging technologies.

The growing startup ecosystem is considered an important component of Morocco’s technology strategy. By supporting innovative companies and strengthening links between entrepreneurs, investors and research institutions, the country aims to create an environment capable of attracting investment and developing locally generated technological solutions.

Artificial intelligence is also expected to have a growing impact on sectors such as industry, agriculture, healthcare, finance and public services. The digitalization of government services, in particular, could improve administrative efficiency while making public services more accessible to citizens and businesses.

Morocco’s geographical position and its economic links with Europe and Africa could further reinforce its ambitions. The country is seeking to establish itself as a technological bridge between different markets while benefiting from its infrastructure, expanding digital ecosystem and growing pool of skilled professionals.

The German broadcaster described Morocco’s AI ambitions as part of a wider effort to build a stronger digital future for the country. The objective is not only to adopt technologies developed elsewhere, but also to develop the skills, infrastructure and entrepreneurial ecosystem needed to participate more actively in the global technology economy.

With 2030 emerging as an important horizon for Morocco’s development plans, artificial intelligence is likely to remain a key priority. Continued investment in infrastructure, education, research and innovation could determine whether the country succeeds in transforming its growing digital ambitions into a durable position as one of Africa’s leading technology hubs.
