Egypt: At least 18 killed in pickup truck crash, including several children
At least 18 people were killed in northern Egypt on Tuesday after two pickup trucks carrying agricultural workers were involved in a crash in Ismailia governorate, according to a medical source cited by AFP.
The victims were predominantly teenagers, highlighting once again the dangers faced by young people working in Egypt’s informal agricultural sector.
Most victims were teenagers
A medical source told AFP that most of those killed were around 13 or 14 years old. The youngest reported victim was 10, according to Egyptian media outlet Al-Masry Al-Youm.
The circumstances of the collision were not immediately fully established, but the accident involved two pickup trucks transporting agricultural workers.
An earlier assessment from Egypt’s Health Ministry had put the total number of casualties at 47, including around 30 injured people, before the death toll was subsequently reported at at least 18.
Pickup trucks widely used for informal labour
Pickup trucks remain a common means of transport for agricultural workers in Egypt, particularly in informal employment.
The vehicles are frequently used to move groups of workers between rural communities and agricultural sites, despite the safety risks associated with transporting large numbers of passengers in vehicles not designed for that purpose.
The practice can be particularly dangerous when minors are among those travelling for work.
A recurring road-safety concern
The crash underscores wider concerns surrounding road safety and informal employment in Egypt, where agricultural labour can involve workers travelling long distances in difficult conditions.
Overcrowding and inadequate passenger protection can increase the consequences of a road accident, particularly when workers are transported in the open or rear sections of pickup trucks.
The presence of children among the victims has also drawn attention to the vulnerability of minors involved in informal agricultural work.
Authorities assess the aftermath
Emergency services and medical teams were deployed following the crash as authorities worked to establish the full circumstances of the accident and assist the injured.
The final number of casualties could change as hospitals complete their assessments and authorities continue identifying victims.
The tragedy has renewed scrutiny of the risks faced by informal agricultural workers and the transport arrangements used to move them, particularly in areas where pickup trucks remain an essential part of daily travel.
