Microsoft raises Windows licensing costs as computer prices face new pressure

Computer buyers are facing another potential increase in the cost of new devices as Microsoft reportedly raises the licensing fees that manufacturers pay for Windows. The move comes at a time when the global PC industry is already dealing with higher prices for memory, processors and other components linked in part to strong demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure.

According to reports from Taiwan, Microsoft increased Windows licensing fees for computer manufacturers in July. Industry executives cited in the reports said the new increases range from approximately 7% to 10%, significantly above the relatively modest annual adjustments manufacturers had become accustomed to.

The cost of a Windows license is not identical across all computers. It can vary depending on the category of processor installed in the device, meaning manufacturers may pay different amounts for systems equipped with higher-end chips compared with more affordable configurations.

The increase could eventually contribute to higher retail prices. Industry estimates cited in reports suggest that computer prices could rise by around 5% during the current quarter, although the final impact will depend on manufacturers, component costs and competitive conditions in the market.

Consumers may not immediately notice the effect of the Windows licensing increase because computer prices are already being influenced by several other factors. Memory and SSD prices have risen amid strong demand, while processors and other components have also become more expensive.

Major Taiwanese manufacturers have already indicated that they are adjusting prices. Asus and Acer have reportedly announced increases of around 5% for the current quarter, while some Asus products are said to cost significantly more than they did at the end of 2025.

The broader price environment is creating additional challenges for the global PC market. According to Counterpoint estimates cited in the reports, worldwide computer shipments could reach around 65 million units in the second quarter of 2026, representing a 4% year-on-year decline and potentially marking the first annual drop since early 2025.

Artificial intelligence-enabled computers and the transition toward newer versions of Windows continue to encourage some consumers and businesses to replace older machines. However, rising hardware costs are making upgrades more expensive and could cause buyers to postpone purchases.

The situation illustrates the complex pressures facing the PC industry. Demand for components associated with AI is contributing to higher costs across parts of the supply chain, while manufacturers must also absorb increases in software licensing and other production expenses.

For consumers, the result could be a more expensive computer market, with price increases arriving without necessarily bringing significant improvements in hardware specifications. Manufacturers will therefore have to balance higher production costs with increasingly price-sensitive customers as the PC market enters the second half of 2026.
