Morocco ranks among Africa’s leaders in mobile internet performance

Morocco has strengthened its position in Africa’s digital landscape, ranking second on the continent for mobile internet download speeds during the first half of 2026, according to measurements published by nPerf.

The ranking is based on tests conducted between January 1 and July 1, 2026, and places Morocco behind Madagascar. Moroccan users recorded an average download speed of 73.8 Mbps, compared with 81.9 Mbps in Madagascar. Togo ranked third with 64.1 Mbps.

Algeria followed in fourth place with 40.9 Mbps, while Tunisia and Senegal recorded average speeds of 34.6 Mbps and 33.3 Mbps respectively. South Africa ranked seventh at 31.4 Mbps, followed by Côte d’Ivoire at 26.3 Mbps. Kenya and Benin completed the African top ten with 23.4 Mbps and 21.0 Mbps.

Beyond download speeds, Morocco also achieved the highest score in a separate comparison measuring mobile web-browsing performance among countries with similar income levels. The Kingdom recorded a score of 57.2%, narrowly ahead of India at 57.1%. Tunisia ranked third with 55.9%, followed by Ukraine at 53.6%.

The comparison also included Kyrgyzstan, Algeria, Vietnam, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt and Senegal among the ten best-performing countries. The wider ranking covered 20 countries, highlighting significant differences in the quality of mobile internet experiences across emerging markets.

Morocco’s strong results reflect the continued development of its telecommunications infrastructure and the growing importance of mobile connectivity for everyday activities, including communication, digital services, online commerce and access to information.

The figures also illustrate that internet performance cannot be assessed through download speed alone. Network responsiveness and the quality of the browsing experience are equally important for users, particularly as increasingly sophisticated digital services become part of daily life.

Morocco’s position in both measurements underlines its growing role in Africa’s digital transformation. Continued investment in telecommunications networks, including the expansion of advanced mobile technologies, could further strengthen the country’s competitiveness and support the development of its digital economy.

It is important to note that nPerf’s figures represent the results of network performance tests carried out during a specific period. They therefore provide an indication of users’ measured experience rather than a permanent ranking of national internet infrastructure.
