Jaguar Unveils Bold New Electric Vehicle Emphasizing Fearless Creativity

Jaguar’s design leader has described the brand’s new electric car as a testament to “fearless creativity” following its unveiling, which has sparked both excitement and controversy. The vehicle, part of a broader rebranding initiative, represents a major departure from the brand’s previous direction and signals a bold new era for the luxury automaker.

At the launch event in Miami, Gerry McGovern, who oversees design for Jaguar’s parent company, emphasized the importance of challenging conventions. “Some may love it now, some may love it later, and some may never love it,” McGovern remarked. “That’s what fearless creativity does.” The new model, called the Type 00, is a concept vehicle that aims to set the tone for Jaguar’s upcoming relaunch, which is expected to culminate in a production-ready version due for release in late 2025. Sales of the four-door Grand Tourer are anticipated to begin in 2026.

The unveiling of the Type 00 has already generated more attention than typical car reveals, thanks to an unusual marketing campaign. The initial teaser trailer, which did not feature the car itself, led to polarized online reactions. Notably, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, humorously questioned whether the brand even sold cars.

Jaguar’s choice of Miami as the location for the launch, coinciding with the city’s art week, underscores the company’s shift away from its traditional premium market to appeal to a more global, affluent audience. This strategy aims to distinguish Jaguar from competitors like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, with the production model expected to cost over £100,000—nearly double the price of previous models.

The launch event also featured a performance by British grime artist Skepta, signaling Jaguar’s intent to attract a younger, urban demographic, despite the challenge the car’s long, bulky design may pose on crowded city streets. The concept model was revealed in two striking colors—Miami pink and London blue—marking a clear departure from Jaguar’s classic racing green.

Images of the car, which leaked ahead of the official launch, reveal a number of futuristic features, including a wraparound windscreen, a long front bonnet, and a rear-view video screen replacing the traditional rear window. Additionally, wing mirrors have been swapped for cameras, and dials and entertainment screens slide out from the front dashboard. The new Jaguar logo, written in a sleek sans-serif font, also makes its debut on the vehicle, with the iconic "leaper" cat etched onto pop-out side cameras. The traditional “growler” badge has been omitted in favor of a more minimalist design approach.

Manufactured in Solihull, UK, the Type 00 is expected to offer up to 478 miles of range, with rapid charging providing 200 miles of charge in just 15 minutes.

Adrian Mardell, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, expressed his vision for the brand’s future, stating that he wants Jaguar to reclaim its position as an "original British luxury brand unmatched in its heritage, artistry, and emotional magnetism." He added, “That’s the Jaguar we are recapturing, and we will create the same sense of awe that surrounded iconic models like the E-type.”

In discussing the design, McGovern drew inspiration from British cultural icons such as David Bowie, Vivienne Westwood, and architect Richard Rogers, noting their roles as trailblazers who defied convention. “They had no desire to copy the norm,” he said, reinforcing Jaguar’s commitment to innovation and pushing boundaries in the world of automotive design.
