Morocco moves closer to launching its first offshore wind farm project
Morocco is taking a new step toward expanding its renewable energy capacity, with an international consortium led by offshore energy consultancy OWC commissioned to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study for the country’s first offshore wind farm.
The assignment, commissioned by the European Investment Bank, will examine the potential for developing offshore wind resources along Morocco’s coastline and assess whether the conditions are suitable for a large-scale project.
The feasibility study will cover the technical, economic and environmental aspects of the proposed development. It will also identify potential offshore locations, assess wind resources and examine the infrastructure required to connect electricity generated at sea to Morocco’s power grid.
The initiative comes as Morocco continues to diversify its energy mix and increase investment in renewable power. The country’s extensive Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines offer significant potential for offshore wind development, an emerging technology that is increasingly being considered as part of long-term clean-energy strategies.
Developing offshore wind could provide Morocco with an additional source of domestic electricity while helping strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on imported conventional fuels. The project could also complement the country’s existing investments in solar and onshore wind power.
The initiative fits into Morocco’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy and develop new sectors linked to the green economy. Alongside solar and wind projects, the country is also positioning itself in areas such as green hydrogen and low-carbon industrial development.
Beyond electricity generation, the development of an offshore wind industry could create opportunities across a wider economic ecosystem. Engineering, equipment manufacturing, maritime services, maintenance, logistics and port infrastructure could all benefit from the emergence of a new offshore energy sector.
The project could therefore have implications not only for Morocco’s energy transition but also for investment and employment. Establishing the necessary technical and industrial capabilities could gradually support the development of local expertise and supply chains around offshore renewable energy.
The feasibility study will be an important first step in determining whether Morocco can move from resource assessment to the construction of an operational offshore wind farm. Its findings are expected to provide greater clarity on suitable sites, technical requirements, economic viability and the infrastructure needed to integrate offshore electricity into the national grid.
For Morocco, the initiative marks the beginning of a new chapter in renewable energy development and could eventually open the way for the country to establish its first offshore wind farm while strengthening its position as a regional destination for clean-energy investment.
