Ukraine and Poland explore joint bid to host a future World Cup
Ukraine and Poland are considering a joint bid to host a future edition of the FIFA World Cup, an ambitious proposal that could place the two neighboring countries in the race to stage football’s biggest international tournament in the coming decades.
Ukrainian Sports Minister Matvii Bidnyi said Kyiv would like to pursue a World Cup hosting project with Poland in the future, confirming that discussions between the two countries are already taking place.
Bidnyi said the earliest realistic opportunity would likely come in the 2040s, giving both countries considerable time to develop the infrastructure, facilities and organizational plans required to stage a tournament of such scale. He stressed that preparations would need to begin well in advance.
The possibility of a joint bid was reportedly discussed on the sidelines of a Ukraine reconstruction conference held in the Polish city of Gdańsk. A shared candidacy could also build on the countries’ existing cooperation in areas including infrastructure, sports and regional development.
The next confirmed World Cup editions are already allocated. Spain, Portugal and Morocco will jointly host the 2030 tournament, while Saudi Arabia is scheduled to stage the 2034 edition. Any Ukrainian-Polish proposal would therefore target a later tournament.
For Ukraine, hosting the World Cup would represent a major long-term sporting and reconstruction objective. The country last appeared at the men’s World Cup in 2006, reaching the quarter-finals in Germany. Ukraine failed to qualify for the 2026 tournament, a setback that generated considerable disappointment among supporters.
A future joint bid with Poland could offer both countries an opportunity to combine their sporting infrastructure and organizational experience while presenting a broader regional project to FIFA. However, any formal candidacy would still depend on political decisions, infrastructure development and FIFA’s future bidding process.
