Morocco moves to strengthen maritime security with advanced unmanned technology

Morocco is stepping up efforts to modernize the capabilities of its Royal Navy after the Netherlands approved the delivery of two unmanned surface vessels designed to support mine countermeasures and underwater threat detection.

According to a report published by maritime affairs platform Puente de Mando on Thursday, September 3, 2026, the deal is valued at approximately €13 million. It includes the two unmanned vessels, associated technological systems and equipment, spare parts, as well as training, technical assistance and support services.

One of the vessels will be used primarily to detect, locate and identify naval mines before supporting their neutralization. The technology is intended to allow dangerous operations involving underwater explosives to be carried out remotely, reducing the exposure of naval personnel to risks, particularly around ports and strategically sensitive shipping routes.

The second vessel will be equipped with advanced sensors and sonar systems designed to monitor potential underwater activity and threats. Its deployment is expected to strengthen Morocco’s ability to conduct maritime surveillance and protect waters close to its coastline.

The agreement also includes a shared control station for operating the two vessels, along with technical documentation, spare parts, user training programs and ongoing technical support.

The manufacturer and specific models have not been publicly identified, reportedly due to security considerations surrounding the equipment. The vessels are nevertheless expected to be built at specialized maritime facilities in the Netherlands.

The acquisition forms part of Morocco’s broader effort to upgrade the Royal Navy and expand its use of unmanned systems for surveillance, reconnaissance and maritime security. With the country’s ports, shipping routes and territorial waters becoming increasingly important from both an economic and strategic perspective, unmanned technologies are emerging as a key component of Morocco’s efforts to monitor and respond to maritime threats while limiting risks to personnel.
