Messi’s international retirement prompts Argentina to rethink its plans
Lionel Messi’s decision to step away from international football is already having an impact on Argentina’s plans, with the national team reportedly abandoning an upcoming Asian tour and preparing for a different schedule during the next international break.
The Argentine Football Association is expected to replace the planned trip to Asia, scheduled for the September 21 to October 6 window, with three friendly matches on home soil. The change would give head coach Lionel Scaloni an opportunity to begin reshaping the squad as Argentina prepares for a new era without its long-time captain and most influential player.
According to reports from Argentine media, the federation is finalizing the new schedule, with the first match expected to be played at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires. The opponent could come from South America or the Concacaf region.
The other two fixtures are likely to be held outside the capital, with Córdoba and Rosario among the cities being considered to host the national team.
Journalist Diego Monroig reported on ESPN’s SportsCenter that there is around a 90% chance Argentina will play all of its matches during the international window at home after arrangements for the overseas tour collapsed.
Argentina had been close to finalizing an Asian tour, including a potential meeting with China, but Messi’s decision to end his international career appears to have prompted officials to reconsider the entire plan.
The proposed friendlies could become an important testing ground for Scaloni as he looks to introduce new players and adjust the team’s tactical structure. Argentina is entering a period of transition following its latest major international campaign, with the coaching staff expected to assess younger options while maintaining the competitive standards established during the Messi era.
Another international window is scheduled for November 9 to 17, providing Scaloni and his staff with further opportunities to experiment with the squad and prepare Argentina for the next phase of its international football program.
Messi’s departure therefore represents more than the loss of a legendary player. It is also forcing Argentina to reconsider how it prepares, travels and builds its squad as the reigning generation gradually gives way to a new group of players.
