Italy braces for sixth heatwave as temperatures could climb 8°C above seasonal average

Italy is preparing for its sixth heatwave of the summer as a strong area of high pressure is expected to return from Friday, bringing several days of unusually hot weather across the country.

The hot spell is forecast to continue through next Wednesday, with temperatures potentially reaching as much as 8°C above seasonal norms in some areas. Meteorologists expect daytime highs of 37°C to 38°C in parts of Italy, while major cities could also experience exceptionally warm conditions for early September.

Meteorologist Lorenzo Tedici said temperatures in Milan could reach between 34°C and 35°C, bringing the city close to its September record of 34.6°C. Rome could see highs of 35°C to 36°C, approaching its monthly record of 35.6°C.

Despite the intensity of the heat, shorter daylight hours in September are expected to limit solar radiation compared with the peak of summer. This could prevent temperatures from reaching even more extreme levels, according to weather experts.

However, meteorologists are warning that the most significant risk may come after the heatwave. Sea temperatures remain unusually high, and warmer waters can provide additional energy for severe weather systems during the autumn months.

The combination of warm Mediterranean waters and the arrival of colder air masses from northern Europe could increase the risk of powerful thunderstorms and other extreme weather events. When colder air encounters the warmer, moisture-rich atmosphere over the Mediterranean, conditions can become favorable for intense storms and heavy rainfall.

The latest heatwave highlights the increasingly complex weather patterns affecting Italy, where repeated periods of extreme heat are being followed by concerns over potentially severe autumn storms.
