EU not yet ready to provide Spain with requested support for Ceuta
The European Union is not yet prepared to provide the assistance requested by Spain to support Ceuta following a major wave of irregular migration that affected the Spanish enclave at the end of July, Reuters reported.
European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert said the bloc was still assessing Madrid’s request and that several important questions remained unanswered. Spanish authorities must provide further information before the European Commission can complete its evaluation and determine what support may be offered.
Spain had asked the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, for assistance in dealing with the migration situation in Ceuta after tens of thousands of migrants reportedly attempted to cross into the enclave irregularly during the late-July episode.
The request came more than a month after the mass crossings, as Spanish authorities continued to deal with the consequences of the unprecedented influx and sought greater European support for border management.
The European Commission’s position indicates that Madrid’s request remains under review rather than being immediately approved. The outcome will depend on the additional information requested by Brussels and the subsequent assessment of the situation.
The episode has once again placed Ceuta at the center of the broader European debate over irregular migration, border management and cooperation between EU member states and neighboring countries.
