China launches its largest vehicle recall campaign as safety rules tighten
China is taking a stricter approach to vehicle safety as 11 automakers launch recalls and software updates aimed at improving emergency door-opening systems. The campaign marks a significant regulatory move as authorities seek to ensure that drivers, passengers and rescue teams can quickly access mechanical door releases during accidents and other emergencies.
Major manufacturers, including Tesla and Xiaomi, are among the companies affected by the measures. The recalls largely focus on potential difficulties in identifying or operating mechanical door handles, particularly in vehicles equipped with concealed or integrated exterior handles.
Hidden door handles have become increasingly common in modern electric vehicles. Automakers have adopted the designs for aesthetic reasons and to improve aerodynamic efficiency, but regulators are increasingly examining whether these systems remain practical when electronic systems fail or a vehicle is involved in a serious accident.
Under the recall measures, nine of the 11 affected manufacturers will install warning labels free of charge to clearly identify the location of mechanical emergency releases. Several manufacturers will also distribute remote software updates designed to address problems associated with electronic door-opening systems.
According to information submitted to China's market regulator, at least six companies announced what they described as the largest recalls in their respective histories. The manufacturers include Tesla, Xiaomi, Leapmotor, XPeng, Zeekr and Lynk & Co.
The campaign reflects a broader shift in China's automotive regulatory approach. Authorities are increasingly evaluating advanced vehicle technologies not only on performance and innovation but also on their usability and reliability in unusual or dangerous circumstances.
Emergency access has become particularly important as electric vehicles increasingly rely on electronic controls and sophisticated software. In a crash or power failure, passengers may need a clearly identifiable mechanical alternative to electronic systems.
China is also preparing stricter rules for future vehicle designs. From 2027, authorities are expected to restrict the use of door handles that are completely hidden or fully integrated into the bodywork. The proposed requirements could force manufacturers to reconsider designs that have become increasingly widespread across the electric-vehicle industry.
The development is significant because concealed door handles were strongly associated with Tesla before being adopted by numerous Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturers. What was initially promoted as a combination of modern styling and improved aerodynamics is now facing greater scrutiny over emergency accessibility.
For automakers, the new requirements could mean redesigning vehicle doors, modifying existing models and introducing more visible emergency-release mechanisms. Manufacturers will also have to balance aerodynamic efficiency and design considerations with safety requirements.
The recalls highlight the growing importance of software in modern vehicles. As cars become increasingly dependent on electronic systems, software updates can provide manufacturers with a rapid way to address certain technical problems without requiring customers to visit dealerships.
However, software cannot replace physical emergency mechanisms in every situation. A vehicle involved in a severe collision or experiencing a complete electrical failure may require a mechanical solution that passengers and emergency personnel can locate immediately.
China's latest measures could therefore influence automotive design beyond its domestic market. As Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturers expand internationally, regulatory standards developed in China could become an additional factor in the design and engineering of future models.
The campaign also illustrates the growing challenge facing automakers as vehicles become more technologically sophisticated. Features designed to improve convenience, efficiency and appearance must increasingly be evaluated against their performance during accidents and other exceptional situations.
By tightening safety requirements and demanding corrective measures from manufacturers, Chinese authorities are signaling that technological innovation will have to go hand in hand with practical safety.
The automotive industry is consequently entering a period in which vehicle design will be judged not only by its appearance, digital capabilities and efficiency, but also by how easily occupants and rescuers can operate essential systems when technology fails.
