European Commission delays decision on Spain’s request for Ceuta migration support
The European Commission has postponed a decision on Spain’s request for European financial assistance to help Ceuta deal with growing migration pressures, saying the application remains under assessment and that additional information is still required from Spanish authorities.
A European Commission spokesperson said Brussels was treating the Spanish request as a priority but had not yet reached a final decision on the funding sought by Madrid. Further clarification is reportedly needed on several aspects of the application before the assessment can be completed.
The delay comes as migration has become an increasingly sensitive issue in Spain, particularly in Ceuta, the Spanish enclave on Morocco’s northern coast. According to figures included in Spain’s request, at least 72,000 people arriving from Morocco crossed into the city during July, adding to pressure on local authorities and border-management services.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has criticized what he considers an insufficient level of European solidarity with Spain as it deals with irregular migration. Madrid has argued that the pressure on Ceuta and the neighboring enclave of Melilla has broader European implications and therefore requires a coordinated response from the European Union.
The Spanish government is seeking financial support for Ceuta to strengthen its capacity to manage migrant arrivals and reinforce measures related to border control and reception. Madrid says additional resources are necessary to respond effectively to the operational and security challenges facing the two enclaves.
Sánchez has also stressed the difficulty of guaranteeing complete security along the borders surrounding Ceuta and Melilla, while calling for greater European involvement in addressing the migration pressures affecting Spain’s North African territories.
For the Spanish government, the European funding request is part of a broader effort to secure greater support from EU institutions and member states for countries facing disproportionate migration pressures. The issue has also highlighted wider debates within the bloc over responsibility-sharing, border management and financial assistance.
The European Commission is expected to continue examining the Spanish application in the coming period. A final decision will depend on the submission of the additional information and clarifications requested from the Spanish authorities.
