Volkswagen puts four German plants at risk as it plans 50,000 more job cuts
German automotive giant Volkswagen plans to eliminate another 50,000 jobs over the coming years as part of an extensive cost-cutting and restructuring program aimed at improving the competitiveness of the group.
The company said Thursday evening that reducing its global workforce capacity was necessary to meet the objectives of its transformation strategy. The planned cuts come as Volkswagen faces mounting pressure from high production costs, intense international competition and the accelerating shift toward electric mobility.
Volkswagen also warned that the future of four of its German production sites could be at risk. The company said it could not guarantee the long-term competitiveness of the plants in Emden, Zwickau, Hanover and Neckarsulm under current conditions.
The potential changes are expected to take place gradually, with the affected sites facing uncertainty between 2031 and 2034. The warning has raised concerns over the future of thousands of industrial jobs and the wider economic impact on regions that have traditionally relied heavily on the automotive sector.
The restructuring reflects the broader challenges confronting Germany’s car industry, which is undergoing a major transformation as manufacturers seek to reduce costs while investing heavily in electric vehicles, software and new production technologies.
Volkswagen’s plans underline the scale of the adjustment facing one of Europe’s largest automotive groups as it attempts to remain competitive while reshaping its manufacturing footprint in Germany and abroad.
