Hungary and EU hold talks to unlock billions in frozen funds
Hungary and the European Commission are preparing to hold high-level discussions aimed at releasing billions of euros in funding that have been frozen over concerns related to rule-of-law standards.
The talks will involve European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Hungary’s incoming prime minister Peter Magyar. The negotiations are expected to focus on identifying the legal and institutional reforms required for Hungary to regain access to approximately 17 billion euros in suspended funds.
A significant portion of the blocked money—around 11 billion euros from the European recovery fund established after the pandemic—faces a strict deadline. If not accessed in time, these funds could be permanently lost, increasing pressure on both sides to reach an agreement quickly.
The recent electoral victory of Magyar’s political movement has reshaped Hungary’s political landscape. With a strong parliamentary majority, the incoming government is seen as having the capacity to implement the necessary reforms more rapidly, including potential constitutional changes.
EU officials have indicated that ongoing discussions are focused on ensuring that all required measures are taken as soon as possible. The goal is to ensure that the funds, originally intended to support Hungary’s economic development and recovery, can benefit citizens without further delay.
The outcome of these negotiations could mark a turning point in relations between Hungary and the European Union, while also highlighting the bloc’s broader efforts to enforce governance standards among its member states.
