Hungarian prime minister nominates chess legend Judit Polgar for presidency
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has announced his intention to nominate former chess champion Judit Polgar for the presidency, presenting the internationally renowned grandmaster as a unifying figure during a period of political transition.
The proposal, unveiled on Monday, would place one of Hungary's most celebrated sporting figures at the head of state, pending her acceptance of the role.
Call for unity and stability
In a statement shared on social media, Magyar said Hungary needed "unity, peace and a president of whom all Hungarians can be proud."
The prime minister also revealed that he plans to meet Judit Polgar on Tuesday to formally ask whether she is willing to assume the presidency on an interim basis until a new Constitution is adopted.
The announcement signals the government's intention to appoint a widely respected public figure with an international reputation beyond politics.
A globally respected chess icon
Judit Polgar is widely regarded as one of the greatest female chess players in history. Throughout her career, she broke numerous barriers in international chess, competing successfully against the world's strongest grandmasters and earning recognition as one of Hungary's most accomplished athletes.
Her achievements have made her a prominent national figure, extending her influence well beyond the world of competitive chess.
Presidency linked to constitutional transition
According to the prime minister's proposal, Polgar would serve as president during a transitional period leading to the adoption of a new Hungarian Constitution.
No indication has yet been given as to whether she will accept the nomination, with discussions expected to take place during the planned meeting between the two on Tuesday.
If confirmed, the appointment would mark an unusual transition from elite sport to high public office, reflecting the government's effort to place a respected non-partisan personality in the presidency during a pivotal moment in Hungary's constitutional process.
