France to appoint new government before October 1

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced that his new government will be appointed before the parliamentary session begins on October 1, in an interview published Friday by Le Parisien.

“The government will be named before the start of parliamentary work. I want to continue working on the budget project. Ministers who wish to join must fully embrace the responsibilities of government,” Lecornu said. He clarified that there would be no recruitment of personalities from the Socialist Party, as all future ministers must “share the main orientations of the common platform.”

Lecornu also promised a robust budget proposal, reflecting consultations with trade unions, employer organizations, and political parties. He indicated a projected deficit of around 4.7%, slightly higher than his predecessor François Bayrou’s 4.6%, due to the decision not to remove pay for two public holidays. The target of 3% by 2029 remains unchanged.

The Prime Minister emphasized social priorities: retirement funding will increase by six billion euros, and healthcare spending by five billion euros in the coming year. At the same time, he plans to propose a six-billion-euro reduction in state expenditures and administration costs.

Regarding the so-called “Zucman tax” targeting ultra-wealthy individuals, Lecornu stated that he does not believe it is the correct approach. “I will propose a budget in which some taxes increase, while others decrease,” he added.
