Elisabeth Borne steps back from Renaissance leadership amid internal disagreements
Former French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced that she is stepping back from the leadership structures of the Renaissance party, citing disagreements over its current political direction.
While she will remain a member of the party, she confirmed her resignation from the National Council and her withdrawal from the executive bureau.
Disagreement over party direction
Borne expressed disagreement with the line promoted by Renaissance’s secretary general Gabriel Attal, saying internal debates are not sufficiently open.
She also emphasized her commitment to her own initiative, “Bâtissons ensemble,” a platform aimed at bringing together actors beyond traditional party lines.
Internal tensions within Renaissance
The Renaissance party, linked to the political movement of Emmanuel Macron, has faced growing internal tensions as it prepares for upcoming political contests, including the 2027 presidential election.
Borne had previously shown reservations about several policy directions, including controversial proposals on secularism and social issues.
Criticism of leadership style
In her statements, Borne criticized what she described as overly centralized decision-making within the party and called for a more collective political approach.
She also reiterated her preference for stronger institutional balance and less vertical governance at the state level.
Political outlook
Despite stepping back from party leadership, Borne confirmed she will remain politically active as a simple member of Renaissance and continue to focus on policy proposals rather than leadership ambitions.
