China’s Xpeng starts mass production of robotaxis in Guangzhou
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng Inc has announced the start of mass production of its first robotaxi at its headquarters in Guangzhou, marking a major step toward fully autonomous mobility.
The company said it aims to achieve fully driverless operations by early 2027 as it accelerates its development of autonomous driving technology in an increasingly competitive global market.
The new robotaxi model, built on the GX platform, is designed using in-house technologies and is described by the company as its first production-ready autonomous taxi system.
Xpeng, often seen as a competitor to Tesla Inc, is expanding its focus beyond electric vehicles into self-driving technology and robotics, reflecting broader trends in the automotive industry.
The company plans to begin pilot robotaxi operations in the second half of the year, with large-scale production expected to reach hundreds or even thousands of units within the next 12 to 18 months.
Industry analysts say China is rapidly advancing in autonomous vehicle development, supported by strong domestic competition and government interest in smart transportation systems.
The move highlights the growing race among global automakers to develop commercially viable robotaxi services, which could reshape urban transport systems in the coming decade.
