Chile begins construction of anti-migration trenches at Peru border
Chile has started building anti-migration trenches along its northern border with Peru, marking a significant step in the new government’s efforts to tighten border control and curb irregular migration.
The initiative follows the recent inauguration of President José Antonio Kast, whose administration has prioritized stricter immigration policies. The construction began near the Chacalluta crossing, a key entry point connecting Chile and Peru.
Heavy machinery has been deployed to dig trenches intended to act as physical barriers against unauthorized crossings. According to government officials, the project forms part of a broader strategy known as the “Border Shield,” aimed at reinforcing state authority in border regions.
During a visit to the construction site, Kast emphasized the need to restore control over national territory. He linked irregular migration to broader security concerns, including drug trafficking and organized crime, arguing that stronger border measures are necessary to address these challenges.
Chile has experienced a notable increase in irregular migration in recent years, with authorities reporting the arrival of over 180,000 migrants through unofficial crossings. The government views the new infrastructure as a key tool to manage these flows more effectively.
In addition to physical barriers, the administration has also increased the presence of military and security forces in the northern regions. These measures are part of a wider policy agenda focused on public safety, economic stability, and institutional control.
While supporters argue that the plan will enhance national security, critics have raised concerns about its humanitarian implications and effectiveness in addressing the root causes of migration.
