Asha Bhosle, legendary Bollywood singer, dies at 92
Asha Bhosle, one of the most iconic voices in Indian cinema music, has died in Mumbai at the age of 92, her family announced on Sunday. The legendary playback singer had been hospitalized due to exhaustion and was also suffering from a chest infection.
Known for a career spanning more than seven decades, Bhosle recorded over 12,000 songs in multiple Indian languages, becoming one of the most prolific and versatile artists in Bollywood history. She was twice nominated for the Grammy Awards and played a major role in shaping film music during the 1970s and 1980s.
Her son confirmed her passing and said that the funeral would take place at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. Tributes quickly poured in from across India and the world.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow, praising her contribution to the country’s cultural heritage. He described her musical journey as one that had “enriched generations and touched countless lives.”
Born in 1933 into a family of musicians, Asha Bhosle began singing at a young age alongside her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar, another legendary figure in Indian music. Over time, she built a unique identity, performing across genres including pop, folk, and film music.
In addition to her musical achievements, she also explored international collaborations, including working with the British virtual band Gorillaz on their album The Mountain, released in 2026.
Beyond music, Bhosle had a passion for cooking and successfully launched a chain of restaurants under her name, with locations in India and abroad, including Dubai and the United Kingdom.
Her death marks the end of an era in Indian music, but her vast catalog continues to influence generations of artists worldwide.
