Capital One confirms closure of Trump Organization bank accounts after review
Capital One has confirmed that it closed bank accounts linked to the Trump Organization following an internal review conducted by its anti-money laundering specialists. The disclosure was made in a legal filing submitted in response to a lawsuit brought by the company connected to former U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to the bank’s court memorandum, the decision to close more than 300 accounts associated with the Trump Organization in March 2021 followed months of analysis and detailed assessments carried out by its compliance teams. Capital One stated that the action was taken in accordance with banking regulations and internal procedures designed to prevent financial crimes.
The disclosure represents one of the first official statements connecting concerns related to anti-money laundering controls with banking decisions involving businesses linked to the Trump family. The bank is seeking the dismissal of the lawsuit, describing the claims as misleading and based on selective interpretations of documents.
The Trump Organization and Eric Trump, son of Donald Trump, filed a lawsuit in 2025 in a federal court in Florida, accusing Capital One of closing the accounts for political reasons. They argued that the decision was influenced by the bank’s alleged political stance and by the public climate following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Capital One rejected these accusations, maintaining that the account closures were the result of a financial compliance process rather than political considerations. The bank argued that the allegations lacked sufficient evidence and did not reflect the full context of its internal review.
This dispute adds to previous tensions between Donald Trump and financial institutions. In 2019, Trump also took legal action against Capital One and Deutsche Bank in an attempt to prevent the disclosure of his financial records to Congress.
The case highlights the growing scrutiny faced by major banks when managing relationships with politically prominent individuals and organizations, as financial institutions continue to balance regulatory obligations, risk management, and reputational concerns.
