Morocco develops an energy system to reduce reliance on Spanish infrastructure

Morocco is accelerating efforts to strengthen its energy independence by developing a national infrastructure system for natural gas and expanding partnerships with international suppliers. The strategy aims to diversify energy sources, reduce dependence on foreign facilities, and position the country as a regional energy hub linking Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic region.

The growing cooperation between Morocco and Russia in the energy sector reflects new opportunities in areas such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and green hydrogen. Russian Ambassador to Morocco Igor Belyaev highlighted Moscow’s interest in expanding collaboration with Rabat, particularly in clean energy projects and LNG development.

Morocco’s energy policy is based on diversification and flexibility, with the country seeking supplies from several international markets, including the United States, Russia, and other producers. This approach is designed to improve energy security, limit exposure to geopolitical risks, and create more competitive conditions for energy imports.

As part of this strategy, Morocco is developing major infrastructure projects to support LNG reception, storage, and regasification. These facilities are expected to be connected to the national gas network in order to meet the growing needs of industries and electricity production plants.

The development of a complete gas infrastructure would allow Morocco to move beyond its role as a simple energy importer and establish an integrated system capable of managing international supplies directly on its territory.

The Nador West Med port is expected to play a key role in this transformation. Thanks to its strategic location and advanced logistics capabilities, the port could become an important regional platform for receiving, storing, processing, and distributing LNG to domestic and potentially international markets.

The expansion of Morocco’s own gas infrastructure could gradually reduce its reliance on Spanish regasification facilities, which have previously been used to process imported LNG before transporting gas to Morocco through the Maghreb-Europe pipeline. Developing domestic capabilities would strengthen national energy sovereignty, lower logistical costs, and provide greater control over supply management.

Beyond natural gas, Morocco is also focusing on green hydrogen and renewable energy. The country aims to use its strong solar and wind resources to become a major producer and exporter of clean fuels in the future.

Potential investments from international partners, including Russian companies interested in green hydrogen projects, could contribute to technology transfer and industrial development. Through these initiatives, Morocco seeks to consolidate its position as a strategic energy player connecting African resources with European and global markets.
