TotalEnergies expands European renewables with Shell acquisition and KKR partnership
TotalEnergies has announced two major transactions aimed at strengthening its renewable energy business in Europe: the acquisition of Shell's onshore renewable energy activities across the continent and the sale of a 50% stake in a portfolio of French renewable assets to US investment firm KKR.
The French energy group said both deals are expected to be completed by the end of 2026, subject to the necessary regulatory approvals.
The transactions reflect TotalEnergies' strategy of expanding its renewable energy footprint while optimizing capital allocation through strategic partnerships.
Acquisition broadens renewable energy platform
Under the agreement, TotalEnergies will acquire all of Shell's onshore renewable energy operations in Europe, adding new assets and development projects to its existing clean energy portfolio.
The acquisition is expected to reinforce the company's position in the European renewable energy market as utilities and energy companies continue investing heavily in low-carbon electricity generation.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
KKR acquires stake in French renewable assets
Alongside the acquisition, TotalEnergies will sell a 50% interest in a portfolio of renewable energy assets located in France to KKR, one of the world's largest investment firms.
The partnership is designed to unlock capital for future investments while allowing TotalEnergies to continue developing and operating the projects alongside its financial partner.
Such asset rotation strategies have become increasingly common among major energy companies seeking to accelerate renewable energy expansion without significantly increasing debt levels.
Strategy supports long-term energy transition
The twin transactions illustrate TotalEnergies' continued transformation from a traditional oil and gas producer into a diversified energy company with a growing focus on renewable electricity.
By combining targeted acquisitions with infrastructure partnerships, the company aims to expand its clean energy capacity while maintaining financial flexibility.
Once regulatory approvals are secured, the deals are expected to strengthen TotalEnergies' competitive position in Europe's rapidly evolving renewable energy sector.
