Alex Honnold conquers Taiwan’s tallest skyscraper
American climber Alex Honnold achieved a remarkable feat on Sunday by reaching the top of Taipei 101, the tallest skyscraper in Taiwan and one of the highest buildings in the world. The ascent was completed without ropes or safety equipment, drawing the attention of hundreds of spectators gathered below.
The 40-year-old athlete, renowned for his extreme free solo climbs, scaled the 508-meter tower in about an hour and a half. Upon reaching the summit, he raised his arms in triumph as onlookers and journalists followed the historic moment. The climb had initially been scheduled for the previous day but was postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions.
The performance was broadcast live on a major streaming platform, attracting international media coverage and fans from across the region. Dressed in a red T-shirt and custom-made climbing shoes, Honnold moved smoothly up the glass-and-steel structure, even interacting with spectators watching from an observation deck partway up the tower.
Already famous for his ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite in 2017, documented in the Oscar-winning film Free Solo, Honnold described the Taipei challenge as the largest free solo urban climb ever attempted. The event further cemented his reputation as one of the most daring climbers of his generation.
