The international mountaineering community is mourning the loss of renowned climber Nirmal Purja, who died after an avalanche struck an expedition on Broad Peak in northern Pakistan.

Elite Exped, the expedition company co-owned by the 43-year-old Nepalese-British alpinist, confirmed his death in an official statement released on Saturday. The company also announced that several other members of the climbing team did not survive the disaster.
