African Union condemns Israel’s recognition of Somaliland
The African Union has strongly condemned Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, rejecting any move that challenges the territorial integrity of Somalia.
In a statement released on Friday, the African Union reiterated its firm opposition to “any recognition of Somaliland,” warning that such actions could undermine the unity and sovereignty of Somalia. The organization stressed that unilateral recognition risks setting a dangerous precedent with far-reaching consequences for peace and stability across the African continent.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not been internationally recognized until now. Israel’s announcement marks the first time a country has formally recognized the self-declared republic, a move that has sparked significant diplomatic reactions within Africa.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, cautioned that attempts to weaken Somalia’s territorial integrity could fuel regional tensions and destabilize fragile political balances. The African Union reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Somalia’s sovereignty in line with international law and continental principles.
The issue comes amid broader regional sensitivities in the Horn of Africa, where questions of borders and statehood continue to shape political and security dynamics.
