US CDC expands investigation into cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has expanded its investigation into a multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis, with four additional states reportedly linked to cases associated with shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico.

According to a report by The Washington Post citing people familiar with the investigation, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania have been added to the list of states connected to the outbreak. They join previously identified states including Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia.

Food safety investigation continues

The outbreak is being investigated as health authorities work to determine the full scope of the contamination and identify potential risks to consumers. The suspected source has been traced to shredded iceberg lettuce, a commonly used ingredient in restaurants, food services and packaged meals.

The CDC has been working with state health departments and other agencies to monitor reported infections and investigate possible links between cases.

Cyclosporiasis affects digestive health

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which can spread through contaminated food or water. The infection can lead to gastrointestinal symptoms and may require medical attention, particularly for vulnerable individuals.

Health authorities typically recommend that consumers follow food safety practices, including proper handling and washing of fresh produce, to reduce the risk of foodborne illness.

Multistate response underway

The addition of four more states highlights the challenge of tracking foodborne outbreaks across the United States, where agricultural products often move through complex national supply chains before reaching consumers.

The CDC and partner agencies are continuing their investigation as officials seek to better understand the distribution network involved and determine whether further cases may emerge.
