Euro zone inflation expectations ease as consumers anticipate slower price growth
Consumers across the euro zone became more optimistic about the inflation outlook in June, lowering their expectations for future price increases as easing energy costs helped improve sentiment, according to the latest European Central Bank (ECB) survey.
The findings suggest households expected inflationary pressures to moderate, although the improvement came against a backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty that continues to influence global energy markets.
Short-term inflation expectations decline
The ECB's Consumer Expectations Survey showed that the median estimate for inflation over the next 12 months fell to 3.0% in June from 3.5% in May. The decline coincided with a temporary easing in energy prices following a period of reduced tensions in the Middle East, which lowered concerns about immediate inflation risks.
However, the geopolitical calm proved short-lived, highlighting the continued vulnerability of energy markets to international developments.
Longer-term outlook remains stable
Consumers also revised down their medium-term expectations. Inflation forecasts for the next three years slipped to 2.8%, compared with 2.9% in the previous survey.
Meanwhile, expectations over a five-year horizon remained unchanged at 2.4%, indicating that households continue to believe inflation will gradually stabilise over the longer term.
Key indicator for ECB policymakers
Consumer inflation expectations are closely monitored by the ECB because they provide insight into how households perceive future price developments and can influence spending, wage negotiations and saving behaviour.
The latest survey indicates that confidence in a gradual slowdown in inflation has strengthened, even though policymakers continue to face uncertainty linked to global geopolitical events and fluctuations in energy costs.
As inflation expectations move closer to levels consistent with the ECB's longer-term objectives, the data may offer additional support for the central bank's assessment of price stability across the euro area.
