Avignon Off Festival maintains strong attendance despite heatwave and economic pressures
The 2026 Avignon Off Festival has delivered resilient attendance figures despite challenging conditions, demonstrating the continued appeal of one of Europe's largest performing arts gatherings. Organisers reported that audience numbers remained broadly in line with the previous year, even as extreme summer temperatures and financial uncertainty affected the cultural sector.
According to Avignon Festival & Compagnies (AF&C), the organisation responsible for coordinating the event, approximately 1.4 million tickets were sold during this year's edition, which concludes on Saturday.
Stable demand despite difficult conditions
Festival officials described attendance as stable compared with the 2025 edition, highlighting the resilience of audiences and theatre companies despite an unusually demanding environment.
Delegated Director Harold David said the festival maintained its level of public participation even as France experienced intense heat and the performing arts industry continued to face economic challenges affecting producers, venues and artists.
More than 1,800 productions showcased
The 2026 edition featured 1,812 productions, reinforcing the Avignon Off Festival's position as one of the world's most significant platforms for independent theatre and live performance.
Every summer, the festival transforms the historic city of Avignon into a major cultural hub, attracting theatre companies, performers, producers and audiences from across France and abroad. Its broad programme spans drama, comedy, dance, music and experimental productions, providing emerging and established artists with extensive visibility.
Cultural sector shows resilience
The stable attendance figures suggest that demand for live performances remains robust despite mounting pressures on the performing arts industry. Rising production costs, inflation and broader economic uncertainty have created financial challenges for many cultural organisations, while extreme weather has added further operational difficulties during the festival season.
Even so, the latest results indicate that the Avignon Off Festival continues to play a central role in France's cultural landscape, maintaining strong public engagement and supporting the vitality of the live entertainment sector.
