Intel shares climb as AI demand fuels recovery hopes and stronger outlook

Intel shares rose sharply in premarket trading on Friday after the semiconductor company delivered a stronger outlook, suggesting that growing demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure could accelerate its long-awaited recovery.

The chipmaker's stock gained around 6% after Intel projected third-quarter revenue above Wall Street expectations and increased its planned capital spending for the year, reinforcing investor confidence in its turnaround strategy.

AI infrastructure drives renewed optimism

Intel raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to $20 billion, up from its previous estimate of $18 billion, as the company invests to capture opportunities created by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence technologies.

The improved outlook reflects increasing adoption of Intel's data centre central processing units (CPUs) by customers building large-scale AI infrastructure.

While competitors such as Nvidia continue to dominate the market for specialised AI accelerator chips, Intel is positioning itself as a broader supplier benefiting from the overall growth of AI computing demand.

New leadership strategy focuses on transformation

Under CEO Lip-Bu Tan, Intel has been working to reshape its business and strengthen its position in the semiconductor industry after years of competitive pressure.

The company aims to become a larger participant in the AI-driven technology cycle by expanding its product portfolio and supporting customers developing next-generation computing systems.

Semiconductor race intensifies

The global semiconductor industry is undergoing a major transformation as companies invest heavily in artificial intelligence, cloud computing and advanced data centres.

Intel's improved forecast provides a positive signal for its recovery efforts, although the company continues to face intense competition from rivals that have established strong positions in AI hardware.

Investors will now closely monitor whether Intel can convert rising AI demand into sustained growth and regain a stronger role in the rapidly evolving chip market.
