Xpeng recalls more than 33,000 X9 electric vehicles over suspension safety concern

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng has announced a recall of 33,473 X9 multi-purpose vehicles after a potential defect affecting the front air suspension system raised safety concerns. The recall was disclosed in a notice published by China's market regulator on Friday.

The action covers X9 vehicles manufactured between August 8, 2023, and August 11, 2025, and is intended to address a component issue that could develop under specific environmental conditions.

Air suspension defect identified

According to the regulator, some vehicles included in the recall may experience reduced airtightness in the front air springs. Over time, particularly in hot and humid climates, the issue could lead to a gradual loss of air pressure within the suspension system.

If the problem develops, drivers may receive malfunction warnings from the vehicle. In more severe cases, the air leak could affect the vehicle's handling characteristics, increasing potential safety risks.

Preventive recall targets long-term reliability

The recall is designed to eliminate the defect before it results in more serious operational issues. While the regulator highlighted the possibility of handling performance being affected in extreme situations, the campaign reflects a precautionary approach aimed at maintaining vehicle safety and reliability.

Automakers in China have increasingly relied on voluntary recalls to resolve technical issues as electric vehicles become more advanced and incorporate sophisticated suspension, battery and software systems.

Quality control remains under close scrutiny

The recall comes as competition intensifies in China's electric vehicle market, where manufacturers face growing expectations for product quality and safety alongside rapid technological innovation.

For Xpeng, addressing the issue promptly is expected to be an important step in maintaining consumer confidence as the company continues expanding its portfolio in one of the world's most competitive EV markets.
