Germany's Merz appoints first female chief of staff in government reshuffle

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has appointed Nina Warken as his new chief of staff, naming the first woman to hold the position as part of a government reshuffle aimed at strengthening his administration ahead of challenging regional elections.

Warken, who previously served as Health Minister, will take on the influential role as Merz seeks to restore political momentum for his government, which has faced declining public support.

Reshuffle follows political pressure

The leadership change comes after the departure of senior conservative figure Jens Spahn from his role as leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, following controversy linked to a surrogacy-related issue.

Merz indicated that further changes within the government are expected as he attempts to improve the effectiveness and public image of his administration.

Two sources familiar with the discussions said the chancellor was also preparing to replace the transport minister, although the process has been delayed after his initial choice withdrew from consideration.

Government faces electoral challenge

The reshuffle comes before important state elections in September, with Merz's conservative bloc facing pressure from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which has gained ground in opinion polls.

The chancellor is under pressure to demonstrate progress on key issues, including economic reform, competitiveness and public confidence in government leadership.

Focus on economic revival

Merz has pledged reforms aimed at revitalising Germany's economy, which has struggled with industrial challenges, weak growth and international competition.

By bringing new leadership into key government positions, the chancellor hopes to accelerate policy implementation and strengthen his administration ahead of the upcoming electoral tests.
