China Warns Philippines Against Relying on US Support in South China Sea Disputes
Beijing has issued a stern warning to Manila, cautioning Philippine authorities against depending on foreign backing from Washington amid ongoing territorial tensions in the South China Sea.
During a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian addressed emerging reports indicating that US President Donald Trump plans to raise Manila's security concerns during an upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Lin dismissed the intervention, stating that history shows nations relying on external military and political support ultimately risk becoming geopolitical pawns and bearing the negative consequences of their actions. He further reiterated Beijing's long-standing stance that the United States has no direct stake or locus standi in South China Sea territorial disputes.
For decades, China has been locked in complex maritime overlapping claims with several Southeast Asian nations, including Brunei, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines, over resource-rich waters containing major hydrocarbon reserves. Tensions in the region remain high as rival claimants clash over maritime boundaries and strategic shoals.
