Addressing Urban Challenges in Casablanca: Pollution, Water Stress, and Unemployment

The issue of urban resilience and smart cities took center stage at a discussion session held today in Tangier, part of the Medailles Investment Summit. Participants highlighted the urgent need for innovative solutions to tackle pollution, water stress, and unemployment, all while promoting sustainable development and preserving the unique characteristics of urban areas.

Speakers underscored the importance of inclusivity in urban initiatives, emphasizing programs designed to alleviate the rising cost of living and create opportunities for all residents, including those less familiar with new technologies.

In this context, Abdellatif Maâzouz, President of the Casablanca-Settat region, outlined the region's pressing challenges, which include pollution, water stress, and unemployment. He announced the launch of a regional development program focused on addressing these critical issues.

Maâzouz revealed that significant investments exceeding 11 billion dirhams have been earmarked to combat water stress, particularly through the establishment of desalination plants and the reuse of wastewater. In terms of pollution control, the regional council has implemented a ban on polluting activities in key cities such as Casablanca and Mohammedia, prioritizing industries that add substantial value.

Regarding transportation, the region is advancing a smart urban mobility plan that favors rail systems, with trains and trams identified as clean and efficient modes of transport.

This session served to reinforce the commitment of local leaders to create resilient urban environments that not only address immediate challenges but also foster long-term sustainability and growth.

Key Challenges and Initiatives

1. Urban Resilience and Smart Cities: The forum focused on strategies for enhancing urban resilience through smart city solutions.
