Fijian rugby player Saimoni Vunilagi dies after severe heatstroke in Japan
Fijian rugby player Saimoni Vunilagi has died after suffering severe heatstroke following a training session with Japanese second-division club Kyushu KV, the team announced on Saturday.
The 26-year-old second-row forward was taken to a hospital in Fukuoka, in southern Japan, after becoming unwell following training on Monday.
Training session followed by medical emergency
Kyushu KV said Vunilagi developed symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke after the session.
He was subsequently transported to hospital, where he received medical treatment. The club later confirmed his death.
The circumstances have drawn attention to the risks faced by athletes training in extreme temperatures, particularly during Japan's hot summer months.
A young player in his first season with Kyushu KV
Vunilagi had been playing for Kyushu KV during the current season. The club, which competes in Japan's second tier, expressed its condolences following the death of the Fijian forward.
His death is a major loss for the team and for the player's family and friends in Fiji.
Heat remains a major sporting risk
Heat-related illness is a serious concern in outdoor sports, especially when intense physical activity takes place in high temperatures and humidity.
Rugby players can be particularly exposed because training and matches involve sustained physical exertion and protective equipment, which can make it more difficult for the body to regulate its temperature.
Vunilagi's death highlights the importance of carefully managing training conditions when temperatures become dangerous.
