Spain wildfire spreads across more than 4,000 hectares in Huelva
A wildfire in southwestern Spain has affected more than 4,000 hectares in the province of Huelva, with shifting winds making efforts to contain the flames increasingly difficult, local authorities said Saturday.
The blaze broke out near the town of Niebla, in the Andalusian province of Huelva, around 70 kilometres from Spain's southern border with Portugal. Strong winds have contributed to the rapid development of the fire and complicated the work of emergency crews.
More than 4,000 hectares affected
Antonio Sanz, the regional official responsible for emergency situations, said the area affected by the fire had surpassed 4,000 hectares.
The figure does not mean that every part of the area has been completely burned. Authorities are using the wider affected perimeter to assess the scale and progression of the wildfire as firefighters continue operations.
The fire remained active on Saturday, with changing weather conditions making its behaviour difficult to predict.
Strong winds complicate firefighting efforts
Winds reaching between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour swept across the region on Friday afternoon, according to Sanz.
The changing direction of the winds has created additional challenges for firefighters, potentially allowing flames to move towards areas that have not previously been affected.
Such conditions can make it harder for emergency teams to establish secure containment lines and anticipate the fire's next movements.
Authorities remain focused on containment
Emergency services are continuing to monitor the fire's perimeter while working to slow its progression.
The latest situation in Huelva comes during a period of heightened wildfire risk across parts of Spain, where hot and dry conditions combined with strong winds can accelerate the spread of forest fires.
Authorities are expected to maintain close surveillance of the affected area as weather conditions evolve.
