A summer of discontent puts fresh pressure on Trump’s second presidency

President Donald Trump is facing growing political and economic challenges as his second term enters a difficult phase, with declining approval ratings, disputes over tariffs, foreign policy pressures and internal disagreements creating a more complicated political landscape ahead of the midterm elections.

Recent polling suggests that public confidence in the president has weakened. A Quinnipiac University survey reported Trump's approval rating at 32%, while a large majority of respondents said he was not paying enough attention to the economic and social problems affecting ordinary Americans.

Economic perceptions are also becoming a concern for Republicans. A Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated that voters are increasingly divided over which political party is better equipped to manage the economy. The shift is significant because Republicans had maintained an advantage on economic issues for years.

At the same time, Trump's attention has increasingly been drawn to several major projects and symbolic elements associated with his presidency. Plans involving a new White House ballroom, a proposed triumphal arch, a presidential aircraft and changes to the South Lawn have attracted considerable attention.

Some people close to the president reportedly worry that his focus on these projects could distract him from political difficulties and unfavorable polling numbers. Other observers interpret the president's interest in architecture and major construction projects as part of an effort to shape his political legacy.

Trump has also continued to promote a national voting proposal that would require proof of citizenship and identification for voters. However, Republican lawmakers have warned that the legislation faces significant obstacles in the Senate, where it would need 60 votes to overcome a filibuster.

The disagreement has created tensions within the Republican Party, particularly between Trump and some Senate Republicans who have expressed doubts about the legislation's chances of advancing.

Several Republican figures in Congress are increasingly concerned that weak approval ratings could put the party's control of the House of Representatives at risk in the November elections. Some have urged the administration to place greater emphasis on issues such as inflation, household affordability and economic conditions.

The political pressure comes as the United States approaches the 2026 midterm elections, traditionally a challenging period for presidents and their parties. Historically, the president's party often faces losses in congressional elections held halfway through a presidential term.

For Trump, the combination of political resistance, economic concerns, foreign-policy tensions and disputes within his own party could make the months ahead particularly important. His ability to refocus his administration on issues that voters consider their priorities may prove crucial to Republican prospects in November.

The current period therefore represents a significant test for Trump's second presidency. Whether his administration can regain public confidence and maintain Republican unity could determine not only the outcome of the midterms but also the political legacy of his return to the White House.
