Serbia and Ukraine seek closer economic ties during Zelenskiy visit to Belgrade

Serbia and Ukraine have pledged to deepen economic cooperation as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy made his first visit to Belgrade since taking office in 2019, with both sides aiming to advance trade and cooperation despite Serbia's longstanding relationship with Russia.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said Saturday that his country supported Ukraine's independence and wanted to strengthen economic relations between the two nations. However, Belgrade stopped short of announcing any commitment to impose sanctions on Moscow.

Free trade agreement targeted for year-end

One of the main objectives discussed by the two presidents is completing a free trade agreement between Serbia and Ukraine by the end of the year.

The initiative would provide a framework for expanding bilateral commerce and could reinforce economic links at a time when Ukraine is seeking stronger partnerships with European countries.

The discussions form part of Zelenskiy's two-day visit to Belgrade, which concluded Saturday.

Vucic backs Ukraine's territorial integrity

Vucic said Serbia supported Ukraine's territorial integrity, including territories seized by Russia since 2014.

The position is significant given Serbia's close historical and political relationship with Russia. Belgrade has sought to maintain ties with Moscow while also pursuing closer integration with the European Union.

Despite his comments on Ukraine's territorial integrity, Vucic did not indicate that Serbia would impose sanctions against Russia.

Infrastructure and energy among areas of cooperation

Zelenskiy said the discussions extended beyond trade, covering potential cooperation in infrastructure, energy and food security.

These sectors are particularly important for Ukraine as it continues to address the consequences of Russia's war and prepare for the reconstruction and modernization of critical infrastructure.

Greater cooperation with Serbia could also open opportunities for businesses in both countries and strengthen regional economic connections.

Zelenskiy makes first presidential visit to Belgrade

The visit marks Zelenskiy's first trip to Serbia since he became president in 2019.

Although the Ukrainian leader had not previously visited Belgrade during his presidency, Ukraine's first lady, Olena Zelenska, travelled to Serbia in 2024.

The latest high-level meeting signals an effort by both governments to develop their bilateral relationship while navigating the complex geopolitical positions surrounding Russia and Ukraine.
