Marseille overtakes Paris as hotel prices surge across France’s Mediterranean capital
Marseille is experiencing an extraordinary rise in hotel prices this summer, with the southern French city now costing more per night on average than Paris and Nice, according to accommodation price data.
Once considered an affordable alternative for travelers seeking a Mediterranean city break, Marseille has recorded the strongest increase in hotel rates in France this summer.
Data collected by accommodation comparison platform cozycozy, based on more than 550,000 price observations, show that the average nightly rate in Marseille has risen from €148 a year ago to €188 this summer.
That represents a 27% annual increase, dramatically above the national average increase of 4.2%.
Marseille becomes France’s fastest-rising hotel market
The scale of the increase places Marseille at the top of France's hotel price growth rankings.
The trend is not limited to the Mediterranean city. Montpellier has also experienced a substantial rise, with average prices increasing by 19.4% over the same period.
Nice, another major destination on France's southern coast, has seen a more moderate increase of 7.9%.
The result is a striking reversal in the relative cost of several of France's best-known tourist destinations.
This summer, an average night in Marseille costs around €188, compared with €175 in Nice and €182 in Paris.
From affordable destination to premium summer stay
The change represents a major shift in Marseille's tourism profile.
For years, the city was often viewed as a more accessible alternative to France's most expensive tourist destinations. Its combination of Mediterranean scenery, cultural attractions and relatively affordable accommodation helped strengthen its appeal among travelers looking for a lower-cost city break.
The latest figures suggest that this advantage is narrowing rapidly.
The sharp increase in hotel rates reflects the growing popularity of Marseille as a tourist destination and the pressure that strong seasonal demand can place on accommodation prices.
Can Marseille remain an affordable city?
The rise in prices raises a broader question about the city's future identity as a tourist destination.
Marseille has spent years developing its appeal as a major Mediterranean destination, attracting visitors with its coastline, historic neighborhoods, restaurants and cultural scene.
But higher accommodation costs could alter the type of visitor the city attracts.
If prices continue to rise significantly faster than the national average, Marseille could gradually move away from its reputation as a relatively affordable French city.
For travelers planning a summer stay, the message from this year's figures is clear: Marseille may still offer the Mediterranean experience, but the days when a hotel night there was automatically a budget-friendly choice are becoming harder to take for granted.
