Israel army enters southern Lebanon village despite Lebanese military deployment
Israeli forces entered a village in southern Lebanon overnight and constructed an earth embankment blocking a road, according to Lebanon’s state media and the local mayor, in a new incident highlighting the fragility of the ceasefire between the two countries.
The incursion took place in Zawtar al-Gharbiya, a locality that had recently come under the control of the Lebanese army. An AFP correspondent on the ground confirmed the presence of the earth barrier at the eastern entrance to the village.
Israeli forces cross into area recently handed to Lebanese army
The reported operation comes despite the deployment of Lebanese troops in the area in July. The village was designated as the first “pilot zone” under an agreement reached between Lebanon and Israel at the end of June with American backing.
Under the framework, Israeli forces had withdrawn from areas surrounding the zone, allowing the Lebanese army to establish its presence there.
The latest Israeli movement therefore marks a significant development, particularly because it occurred after Lebanese forces had taken responsibility for security in the locality.
According to the Lebanese authorities and the mayor, Israeli troops entered the village during the night before creating a mound of earth that effectively cut off a road.
Ceasefire remains under pressure
The incident adds to continuing tensions along the Israel-Lebanon frontier. Although a ceasefire has been in effect since June, Israeli forces have continued to carry out occasional strikes and demolitions in parts of southern Lebanon.
The persistence of military activity has raised questions over the durability of the arrangements designed to stabilize the border and strengthen the role of the Lebanese army.
The deployment of Lebanese troops was intended to reinforce state control in southern Lebanon, particularly in areas affected by years of conflict. The reported Israeli incursion could complicate those efforts and further test the mechanisms established under the June agreement.
A fragile security arrangement
The latest episode illustrates the difficulties facing the ceasefire framework, with both military activity and territorial control remaining sensitive issues along the border.
For residents of southern Lebanon, the return of military movements and physical barriers underscores the uncertainty surrounding the region despite the formal cessation of hostilities.
The situation also places renewed attention on the Lebanese army's ability to consolidate its presence in areas where Israeli forces have previously operated, while diplomatic efforts seek to prevent further escalation.
