Drôme wildfire stabilised after more than 300 hectares burned
The wildfire that has swept through more than 300 hectares of forest in France’s Drôme department is now considered stabilised, although firefighters remain on alert as two contained flare-ups continue to require close monitoring.
The prefecture said Saturday that the overall situation was under control after several days of firefighting operations near Bellegarde-en-Diois. Authorities estimate that 311 hectares have been affected by the blaze.
Two areas remain under close watch
Despite the improved situation, firefighters are maintaining particular vigilance in two sectors on the southeastern and northeastern edges of the affected area.
Both flare-ups have been contained, but changing wind conditions could potentially push the fire towards vegetation that has not yet burned. Authorities are therefore continuing to monitor the perimeter closely to prevent any renewed spread.
The latest assessment marks a cautious improvement after several days of intensive operations.
Seven firefighters slightly injured
Since the fire began on Monday, around 350 firefighters have been involved in efforts to contain it. Seven firefighters have suffered minor injuries during the operation, according to the prefecture.
No homes have been damaged by the flames, and authorities reported no new injuries during the night from Friday to Saturday.
The absence of damage to residential areas provides some relief as crews continue securing the affected zone and watching for further developments.
Another fire fought in Lozère
Firefighters are also dealing with another wildfire in neighbouring Lozère.
Around 120 firefighters were mobilised after a fire broke out on Friday at approximately 1 p.m. along the shores of Lake Naussac, in the municipality of Naussac-Fontanes.
The two incidents highlight the continuing pressure on emergency services as authorities monitor fire risks across parts of southern France.
