In a diplomatic display of camaraderie, Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron reunited in Washington for a session filled with jokes, firm handshakes, compliments, and gestures of affection. This well-rehearsed diplomatic duo showcased their bond once again, reminiscent of their interactions during Trump's first term.

During the Oval Office meeting, Trump humorously recounted a past dinner at the Eiffel Tower with their wives, where Macron, without an interpreter, spoke to the press in French. Trump, unable to understand, simply nodded in agreement. “The next day, I read the newspapers and realized that wasn’t what we said,” Trump laughed, calling Macron a "clever guy" while jokingly grabbing his arm.

Despite their friendship, Macron didn't shy away from addressing serious issues. As Trump downplayed Europe's involvement in supporting Ukraine, Macron boldly interjected, stating, "Actually, we’ve paid 60% of the total effort." He emphasized the strength of the transatlantic relationship, affirming that both France and the U.S. remained aligned on key matters despite differences.

Their meeting also focused on broader geopolitical issues, including the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Macron subtly challenged Trump’s stance, which included blaming Ukraine for the invasion and seeking closer ties with Moscow. The U.S. even aligned with Russia in blocking a UN resolution reaffirming Ukraine's territorial integrity.

Throughout the encounter, Macron acknowledged the unpredictable nature of Trump's diplomatic approach, likening it to a business deal-making mindset. Trump himself openly stated, "I make deals. That’s all I know—making deals."

While the meeting did not yield concrete commitments on American protection for European troops in Ukraine, Macron viewed it as a turning point in their relationship. Later, during a joint press conference, Trump expressed that Macron had not received sufficient recognition for the reconstruction of Notre-Dame, while Macron reaffirmed that engaging with Trump had always been a pleasure.

Their relationship, though marked by occasional disagreements, never soured as it did between Trump and other world leaders, such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In 2018, Macron gifted Trump a sapling from a World War I memorial forest, but it unfortunately did not survive after being planted at the White House.
