Amazon plans massive gas power plant in Texas to supply data centers
Amazon is facing growing environmental scrutiny over plans for a large data center in West Texas, where the company is investing in an on-site natural-gas power plant that could become one of the largest individual sources of carbon emissions from a US power facility.
The project in Pecos County reflects the enormous energy requirements created by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence. It also highlights the growing challenge for technology companies attempting to expand AI infrastructure while maintaining long-term climate commitments.
Gas turbines would provide dedicated power
According to regulatory documents, the planned facility would use 35 natural-gas turbines capable of generating as much as 7.65 gigawatts of electricity.
The plant could be authorised to emit approximately 33 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, according to regulatory records cited in the report. If built and operated at the permitted level, its emissions would exceed those of any other individual power plant in the United States.
Amazon confirmed that it had recently acquired the Pecos County site, where a developer is constructing the gas-fired generation facility.
The plant is initially expected to operate independently of the wider electricity grid, providing dedicated electricity for Amazon’s planned data center.
AI boom intensifies demand for electricity
The project illustrates the extraordinary amount of electricity required by modern AI infrastructure.
Data centers running AI systems need substantial and continuous power for computing operations, creating new challenges for an electricity system already facing rising demand.
Building dedicated generation can allow technology companies to avoid waiting years for connections to utility networks. Natural-gas facilities can also generally be developed more quickly than some other forms of large-scale generation.
Amazon said it was also examining the potential use of solar power and battery storage at the Texas site.
Climate commitments under pressure
The Texas project comes as Amazon faces questions over its ability to meet its commitment under the Climate Pledge, a voluntary initiative the company co-founded with the goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Amazon's emissions have increased in recent years, and the company has acknowledged that the expansion of AI data centers could make its climate objectives more difficult to achieve.
Amazon spokeswoman Margaret Callahan said the company's climate commitment remained unchanged, while acknowledging that the circumstances surrounding the pledge had evolved as AI demand accelerated.
The company also said the new data center would rely on new on-site generation without increasing electricity costs for Texas households.
A model for future data center development?
The scale of the Texas project has raised broader questions about how the US will supply electricity to the rapidly expanding AI industry.
Michael Thomas, founder of Cleanview, which tracks data-center energy infrastructure, said the Amazon project could offer an indication of how future facilities might be powered as companies seek to secure electricity independently of traditional utility connections.
The development also fits into a wider US policy push to accelerate data-center construction and expand domestic energy production, including natural gas.
For Amazon, the Texas facility could help meet surging computing demand. For environmental advocates and policymakers, however, its potential emissions underline the tension between the AI industry's rapid expansion and efforts to reduce greenhouse-gas pollution.
As technology companies race to build new AI infrastructure, the question of how that infrastructure will be powered is becoming as consequential as the technology itself.
