Ecuador charges seven suspects with murder of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio
Ecuadorian prosecutors have formally charged seven people with murder over the 2023 killing of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, in a case that continues to raise questions about political violence and organized crime in the country.
The suspects include two former left-wing politicians, a businessman and several alleged members of a criminal gang, according to Ecuador’s prosecution service.
Villavicencio killed during 2023 campaign
Fernando Villavicencio, a prominent critic of former socialist president Rafael Correa, was shot dead on August 9, 2023, in Quito while campaigning for the presidency.
The killing shocked Ecuador and underscored the growing security challenges facing the country at the time. A Colombian hitman was identified as the gunman in the attack.
Villavicencio had built his political profile partly through his outspoken criticism of corruption and his opposition to Correa, making him a particularly prominent figure in Ecuador’s political landscape.
Seven people formally charged
The prosecutor’s office announced the formal charges on Saturday, identifying seven people suspected of involvement in the candidate’s murder.
Among those facing prosecution are two former politicians from the left, alongside a businessman and several individuals allegedly connected to a criminal organisation.
The charges represent a significant development in efforts to establish who may have been behind the killing and to determine the different roles allegedly played by those implicated in the case.
A politically sensitive investigation
Villavicencio’s assassination became one of the most consequential episodes of Ecuador’s recent political history. His death occurred during a presidential campaign increasingly overshadowed by violence and the influence of organised crime.
The latest charges come three years after the killing and on the anniversary of Villavicencio’s death. They could provide prosecutors with an opportunity to further examine the alleged network surrounding the assassination and the motives behind the attack.
The case remains politically sensitive, particularly because some of those now facing charges have backgrounds in politics, while others are accused of links to criminal organisations.
