Léon Marchand lowers expectations for European Swimming Championships after injury setback
French Olympic champion Léon Marchand has scaled back his ambitions for the European Swimming Championships after an injury disrupted his preparation, saying his priority is now to compete selectively rather than pursue an extensive programme.
Marchand, a four-time Olympic champion, returned to competition while still recovering from an injury to his right adductor. He estimated that he was only around 70% recovered, forcing him to reconsider the events he had originally targeted.
400m individual medley withdrawal proves difficult
The most significant change concerns the 400m individual medley, an event Marchand had specifically targeted throughout the season.
The French swimmer acknowledged that abandoning the race was particularly disappointing after months of training designed to maximise his performance over the distance.
He said he had made the decision only a few days before the championships, describing it as personally difficult but also a source of relief after weeks of uncertainty over whether his physical condition would allow him to compete.
Marchand also expressed regret for spectators who had planned to watch him compete in the individual medley events.
A more cautious approach after injury
Rather than attempting to maintain the ambitious schedule originally planned, Marchand is now taking a more measured approach to the European championships.
The decision reflects the difficulties of returning to major competition without being fully recovered. His reduced programme is intended to allow him to remain competitive while limiting the demands placed on his injured adductor.
The French swimmer has therefore adjusted his objectives, focusing on making the most of the races in which he can realistically compete at a high level.
Gold remains an ambition
Despite lowering his overall expectations, Marchand has not abandoned the possibility of winning a European title.
He indicated that he would be satisfied with chasing gold in at least one event, a more modest target than the extensive programme initially envisaged.
For a swimmer with four Olympic titles, the revised objective represents a significant change in expectations. Yet the priority appears to be balancing competitiveness with a sensible return from injury rather than risking a setback by attempting too much too soon.
Marchand's European campaign will therefore be closely watched as he tests his form and physical condition following a disrupted season.
