Peru: at least 13 killed in minibus crash in Cusco region
At least 13 people have died and four others have been injured after a public transport minibus collided with a parked semi-trailer in southeastern Peru, police said Saturday.
The crash occurred early Saturday on a road linking Chalhuahuacho, in the Apurimac department, with Arequipa, the capital of the region of the same name.
Children among the victims
The collision involved a minibus carrying passengers and a semi-trailer that was stationary at the time of the incident.
Police said children were among those killed, adding to the gravity of the crash. Four people were injured and required medical attention following the collision.
The exact circumstances that caused the minibus to strike the parked truck have not yet been established.
Investigation underway
Carlos Guizado, chief of police for the Cusco region, confirmed the death toll and the location of the accident.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the position of the semi-trailer, road conditions and the circumstances in which the minibus was travelling.
The accident occurred on a route connecting areas in southern Peru that are separated by considerable distances and mountainous terrain, where road safety remains an important concern.
Further details about the victims and the condition of those injured are expected as the investigation progresses.
