Four people killed in helicopter crash near Rio de Janeiro

Four people were killed when a tourist helicopter crashed in a remote forested area near Vista Chinesa, one of Rio de Janeiro's well-known viewpoints, Brazilian authorities said.

The victims were identified as the pilot and three passengers, according to the local fire department. Officials said identification procedures were still underway following the crash.

Colombian tourists believed among victims

Colombian Consul General to Brazil Diana Paez told EFE that three of those killed were believed to be Colombian tourists.

Forensic teams faced difficulties completing the identification process, with Paez saying that two of the victims had suffered severe burns in the incident.

The Colombian consulate was monitoring the investigation and the identification procedures as Brazilian authorities worked to establish the circumstances of the crash.

Emergency teams face difficult terrain

The helicopter went down in a heavily forested and difficult-to-reach area, complicating the response operation.

Firefighters deployed specialist teams after a fire broke out at the crash site. Images circulated on social media showed flames in the forest following the accident.

The location presented additional challenges for emergency personnel attempting to reach the victims and secure the site.

Scenic flight company operated helicopter

The aircraft was operated by a company offering sightseeing flights to tourists.

The helicopter crashed close to Vista Chinesa, a popular tourist destination overlooking Rio de Janeiro and the coastline. The area is surrounded by dense vegetation, making access to some locations particularly difficult.

Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the crash, including the aircraft's condition, flight circumstances and the events immediately preceding the accident.
